News & Notes Volume 15, No. 8

Weather Alert
As you are probably already aware, there is much talk about a potential storm for our area this coming Thursday night and into Friday.  Please pay attention to local media and our own Twitter account (@beachycoveelem) for information about school closures or delayed openings. If we have a delayed opening, cafeteria services will not be available for recess or lunch as there would not be enough time for cafeteria staff to prepare.

Kindergarten – NO SCHOOL
Classes are cancelled on Friday, January 17, 2020 for our Kindergarten learners as we host our first KinderStart session.  If our whole school is closed on Friday (in whole or in part) due to weather, our KinderStart session will be moved to Monday and school will be cancelled for our Kindergarten learners then instead.  Regardless of the weather – no classes on Friday for Kindergarteners.

Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra
The NSO has a program called “Symphony Goes to School… and Beyond”. Marc David, NSO’s Music Director, will be visiting our school on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 to do a free presentation on the role of the conductor and the instruments of the orchestra. This is a very engaging and interactive presentation and we’re pretty confident that our learners will enjoy it very much.

Pink Shirt Day
Our annual Pink Shirt Day celebrations are planned around Pounce’s (our school mascot) birthday on February 26, 2020.  We have been unable to find corporate sponsorship for our pink shirts this year as we have over the past few years so we are taking a different route.  Instead of ordering shirts for everyone again this year, we are encouraging everyone in our learning community to wear pink on this day – it could be a pink accessory or indeed a full on pink shirt, dress, pants, scarf, etc.  Pink shirts from past celebrations are also perfectly fine.  Our Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Club will host a special breakfast on this day and special breakfasts at our breakfast club are SPECIAL!  We’ll communicate further details about our celebration as we get closer to the date.

School Closure
We have a mid-winter break scheduled for Monday, February 17, 2020 – school will be closed on this day.

50/50 Lottery
We will be running our second and final 50/50 lottery for this school year over the next few weeks.  The proceeds from this lottery will go entirely to our Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Club.  Look for further details in the coming weeks as soon as we get our tickets printed and our lottery license secured.

Skating Parties
Thanks to the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, all of our learners will get to participate in skating parties at the Jack Byrne Arena.  These sessions are scheduled between February 18-21, 2020.  All of the details including specific schedules and permission forms are being sent home today (paper copies).  Please ensure that you return the permission form to your child(ren)’s teacher promptly.

Taste-Test Tuesdays
February is shaping up to be an exciting month for our cafeteria food services as we continue to implement new school food guidelines based on Canada’s Food Guide. In an effort to broaden the menu and continue to provide as much choice as possible, Chartwells in concert with the School Food Guidelines Implementation Team will be offering some new and different taste experiences for our learners each Tuesday in February.  Don’t be surprised when you hear about these taste-ful experiences from your child(ren); you may be calling us to look for recipes.  We’ll share the specifics of the taste tests after they are done just to keep them as surprises for our learners.

Beachy Cove Night at Chapters Bookstore
Our annual Beachy Cove Night at Chapters Bookstore is set for Thursday, March 12, 2020.

Recycling
Thank you to all of our familes who contribute to our recycling program.  Donations of recyclable beverage containers can be made every Tuesday morning at our recyling shed in our Kiss n’ Ride lane as you drop off your chilren for school or you can drop them to our shed at another time that is more convenient for you.
