50/50 Lottery
Our first of two 50/50 lotteries is set to roll out today in support of our literacy and technology initiatives as we continue to build on our leveled text resources and our ChromeBook resources.  We’re providing each of our learners with a book of ten tickets ($2.00 per ticket) and the prize will be as high as $5500 (50% of the amount sold). A letter with other details of the program is being distributed with the tickets. (If you would like extra tickets, please let us know at the office.) Thank you for your kind support.

Kids Eat Smart
Kids Eat Smart Foundation NL will hold the annual Radiothon on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. They will broadcast live from the Avalon Mall, 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. on all stations of VOCM/Big Land FM Radio Network. Please call in your donation on November 6th or donate online at www.kidseatsmart.ca. Please designate BEACHY COVE ELEMENTARY to ensure that we receive your donation.

Thrashless Tuesday
As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment and in light of our recent participation in the global climate strike, we will host “Thrashless Tuesday” on Tuesday, October 22, 2019.  On this day in pafrticular,  we are encouraging our families to minimize or eliminate “thrash” from packed lunches brought from home.  This might include a reusable sandwich container and reusable cutlery.

We are also contemplating a ban on some single-use plastics provided by the school in our cafeteria including straws and utensils.  We would ensure that we have reusable cutlery on hand for those who might forget (if you have some to donate, we’d happily accept them).  What are your thoughts on this initiative?  It may take a little period of adjustment but we believe it can work with time.  Send us your thoughts on how we can implement this successfully.

Spark the Conversation
“Spark the Conversation” is a creative contest where young people are asked to draw or design a picture of how the concept of accessibility makes them feel. It is hoped that these efforts will spark a broader conversation on how accessibility in the built environment benefits us all.

The contest is open to all young people (K-12) in Newfoundland and Labrador, with an easy online submission process for both young people and their families. You can view the prizes and information on the attached student flyer or at www.udnnl.ca or www.universaldesignnetwork.com.

Hallowe’en Parties
We will celebrate Hallowe’en on Thursday, October 31, 2019 during the last hour of the school day.

As you begin the annual process of sourcing costumes, please bear in mind that we cannot permit costumes of a violent or sexual nature in our school and any props should be small, safe, unobtrusive and not represent violence (i.e., guns, etc.).

We are not in a position to accept class sets of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, loot bags, treat bags, etc. at our Hallowe’en Parties; we spend far too much time passing them out and they cause a tremendous mess for our cleaning staff. And, most importantly, we can never be too careful with allergens – far better to be safe than sorry.
