Author Visit
We are thrilled to welcome Anna Humphrey to our school on Monday, May 7, 2018.  Anna is the author of Rhymes with CupidMission (Un)PopularRuby Goldberg’s Bright Idea and the Clara Humble series. She writes in the attic of a big old brick house that she shares with her husband, kids and cats in Kitchener, Ontario.

Anna will conduct writing workshops with all of our grade four learners during her visit to our school next week and we are really looking forward to the experience.

Supply Lists for 2018-2019
Our school supply lists for the next school year have been posted to our school’s website, www.beachycove.ca under the “Supply Lists” tab.  A paper copy of this will be included with your child’s term III progress report that will be released on Thursday, June 28, 2018.

For your convenience, we are partnering with Staples (Stavanger Drive) once again this year through its “School Tools” program.  Information will be provided as to how you can order your child’s entire supply list with the click of a button on your computer.  Experience shows us that these packages represent very good value for money and the convenience of one-stop shopping is excellent.  Please note that this is not a fundraiser – it’s a convenience that we are very pleased to offer up to our families.

Rainbow Crosswalk
The recent media attention on the Town of Springdale’s decision not to allow a rainbow crosswalk in the town has prompted plenty of interest in having our crosswalk painted in the colors of the rainbow.  This project, initiated by one of our families, will get underway in earnest during the next stretch of sunny weather.  Our goal is to have everyone of our learners and staff involved in painting the crosswalk to show our unity with and support for those who identify with the LGBTQ community.  We also extend our thanks and appreciation to those families and individuals who contributed the necessary funds to do this project.

We proudly acknowledge the Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Volunteer Fire Department for pressure washing our existing crosswalk to enable us to get to work as soon as the weather allows. And, we also thank the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s for its support of this initiative.

School Development Surveys
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is once again conducting its annual survey program.  Each year, the department engages in data collection from school staffs (instructional and non-instructional), learners, and families.  The data from these annual surveys guides and directs our annual strategic plan (also known as our school development plan).

We would really appreciate it if you could complete the survey for families by clicking on the following link:
PD Day – Change of Date
As mentioned in an e-mail earlier this week, the date originally communicated (May 18, 2018) for our fifth and final PD day this year has been moved ahead by a week.  We will now be closed on Friday, May 11, 2018.

School Leaving Ceremony
Our annual school leaving assembly is set for Friday, June 1, 2018 at 1:00pm in our school gym.  This assembly is open to our families of our grade four learners.  Each of our grade four learners can invite three family members (due to fire regulations).  There is no charge for this event and our learners will be provided with three tickets that they may distribute to their families.

Please understand that this is an assembly and not a prom – we hold no expectations that families go out and spend extra money on dresses and suits.  It’s meant to be a low-key kind of affair from that point of view.

Art Days
We have finalized the dates for our annual Art Days (we’re running it over two days this year for maximum exposure) exhibit.  This is our opportunity to share the creative talents of all of our learners that they have honed through their participation in ArtsSmarts.  If you can spare a few minutes sometime over the course of June 12-13, 2018, please drop in to our school library to tour the exhibit and see your child(ten)’s artistic creations.

Seussical Jr. – The Musical
Our grade four learners are thrilled to bring you Seussical Jr. – The Musical on June14, 2018 at 1:00pm.  Tickets, on the basis of four per grade four learner, will be on sale on Monday, May 23, 2018.  Tickets are $5.00 each.  Please send along your ticket orders to your child’s teacher.  Any unsold tickets will be made available to those who would like additional tickets on Monday, June 4, 2018

KinderStart # 5
Our fourth KinderStart session is set for Friday, May 25, 2018.  Consequently, our current kindergarten learners will not have school on this day.

Spring Concerts
Our spring concerts are coming up very soon.  Our learners in grades one and two will present their concert at 1:00pm on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 and our kindergarten concert will be staged on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 1:00pm.  Tickets are now on sale (two tickets per learner in grades one and two; four tickets per learner in kindergarten).  Please send along your ticket order to your child’s teacher.  Any unsold tickets will be made available to those looking for additional tickets on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.

Opera Roadshow
We are thrilled to host MUN School of Music’s Opera Roadshow again this year.  All of our learners will get to take in this awesome experience on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. This opera will tell the story of The Billy Goats Gruff using the music of Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti sung in English to tell the story.  We really appreciate the opportunity to bring this wonderful cultural experience to our learners…and it’s FREE!

Grade Four Orientation at Brookside Intermediate
Our grade four learners (soon to be grade five learners) will spend some time at Brookside Intermediate this coming Friday morning for their school orientation.  This should alleviate any worries and anxieties they may be experiencing as they begin to think about their new school for the fall.

Kids Eat Smart Program
Through the initiative and leadership of one of our parents, efforts are underway to establish a breakfast program for our learners here at Beachy Cove.  Our goal is to have a fully operational program, Monday-Friday, in the fall; however, we are aiming to do a “soft start” this spring for a couple of days per week.  Because of space and time restrictions, our program will be a “grab n’ go” type of program where our learners will stop at the breakfast table on their way to class upon arrival in the mornings and grab what is on offer for that particular day.  Our breakfast program menu will follow Canada’s Food Guide.

Cherie Butler, one of our parents, has agreed to fulfill the role of program coordinator; however, as you can appreciate, this will take many volunteer hands to make this program sustainable and successful. If you are in a position to offer your time and organizational talents to Cherie and her team as a breakfast club volunteer, please e-mail her at cherbonn@me.com.

Please understand that our breakfast program will be available to all of our learners…ALL of them.  It is not meant to be a stigmatizing program whatsoever…it’s free and it’s for everyone.
